Smarter Ways to Pack and Move Gear for Your Next Outdoor Adventure
Getting ready for a camping trip, road trip or weekend away often involves more equipment than expected. Between tents, eskies, camp chairs, cooking equipment, food, water and recreational gear, getting everything from storage to the vehicle can feel like a workout before the adventure has even started.
A little organisation can make packing easier, reduce unnecessary lifting and help ensure important gear doesn’t get left behind.
Here are some practical ways to make the process smoother.
Organise Your Gear Before Packing the Car
Instead of carrying items individually from the garage or shed straight to the vehicle, start by grouping everything according to how it will be used.
For example, separate:
- Camping and sleeping equipment
- Cooking supplies
- Food and drinks
- Clothing and personal items
- Outdoor and sporting equipment
- Tools and emergency supplies
This makes it easier to see what you have and identify anything that’s missing before loading begins.
Move Multiple Items at Once
One of the most time-consuming parts of preparing for a trip is making repeated journeys between the house, garage and vehicle.
Using a trolley can make it easier to move storage tubs, eskies, camping equipment and other bulky items in fewer trips. Platform and hand trolleys can be particularly useful when loading heavier gear from a garage or storage area.
The same approach works when you return home and need to unload everything again.
Use Storage Containers to Keep Equipment Together
Loose equipment is harder to transport, organise and pack efficiently.
Storage tubs allow smaller items to be grouped together and can make much better use of the available space in a vehicle, caravan or trailer. Clearly labelling each container also means you don’t have to unpack everything just to find one item at the campsite.
Frequently used supplies should remain easily accessible, while equipment that won’t be needed until camp is established can be packed further away.
Think About Weight, Not Just Space
Making everything fit is only part of packing effectively.
Heavy items should be positioned securely and according to the load requirements of your vehicle, trailer or caravan. Avoid creating unstable stacks simply to squeeze in another piece of equipment.
It’s also worth considering how items will be unloaded at the destination. The heaviest box might fit perfectly at the bottom, but accessing it can become difficult if everything else needs to be removed first.
Create a Dedicated Adventure Storage Area at Home
If camping, fishing or road trips are regular activities, keeping equipment together between adventures can save considerable preparation time.
A section of the garage or shed can be dedicated to outdoor equipment, with shelves and labelled containers for frequently used gear.
Keeping heavier items at an accessible height can also reduce unnecessary lifting when packing for the next trip.
Don’t Forget the Unpacking
After a long drive home, unpacking is rarely the part anyone looks forward to.
Having a simple system makes it much easier. Move equipment back to the garage or storage area in groups, separate anything that needs cleaning or drying and return the rest directly to its usual location.
Camping equipment should be completely dry before long-term storage, particularly tents, awnings and other fabric items that may have been exposed to rain or moisture.
Make Preparation Part of the Adventure
Good organisation doesn’t need to turn a spontaneous weekend away into a major logistical exercise.
A few simple habits, such as grouping equipment, using suitable storage containers and reducing the amount of manual carrying required, can make both departure and return considerably easier.
Whether you’re loading the car for a weekend camping trip, preparing the caravan for a longer journey or packing equipment for a day outdoors, spending a little extra time organising your gear means less time carrying, searching and repacking, and more time enjoying the trip.
