Forty Baskets Beach: Swim With Endangered White’s Seahorses

I’ve been hearing about Forty Baskets Beach for years, but I only recently had the chance to visit this hidden gem on Sydney’s Northern beaches. It turned out to be worth the wait. This picturesque beach offers a unique experience – not only is it family-friendly, but gives you the opportunity to swim with the endangered White’s Seahorse.

A Slice of Paradise along the Spit to Manly Walk

Forty Baskets Beach is a peaceful spot located along the famous Spit to Manly Walk. The beach is an enclosed Middle Harbour tidal pool with a charming boardwalk along one side. As you stroll along the boardwalk, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the serene harbour.

A Refreshing Dip in Pristine Waters

One of the main draws of Forty Baskets Beach is the opportunity for a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters. The beach provides a safe and tranquil environment for swimming, making it a fantastic spot for families and friends to cool off on a sunny day.

Endangered White’s Seahorses: A Hidden Treasure

What sets Forty Baskets Beach apart is its unique underwater residents – White’s seahorses. These magnificent creatures are not only fascinating to observe but also an important part of the marine ecosystem. Unfortunately, these seahorses are endangered, so please do not touch them or interfere with their habitat.  If you are snorkelling, look for a Seahorse that has pointy triangle on the head, its body and tail is generally spiny.  It is generally shorter than pot bellied seahorse, but can grow up to 16cm.

Relaxing by the Grass Reserve

After a refreshing swim, you can unwind on the small grassy reserve adjacent to the beach. It’s shaded by a few graceful Norfolk Pines, offering a lovely place to relax before or after your swim. You can bring a picnic, a good book, or simply bask in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

Entertainment for the Little Ones

If you’re visiting with children, Forty Baskets Beach has a swing set and rock formations that will keep the little ones entertained. While the kids have fun, you can enjoy the beach’s peaceful ambience.

Exploring the Surroundings

If you’re up for a bit of exercise and a chance to soak in more stunning views, you can continue your adventure along the Spit to Manly Walk. A short stroll along the trail will allow you to work up a sweat while taking in the breathtaking views of the harbour. It’s a great way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this part of Sydney.

Getting to Forty Baskets Beach

Getting to Forty Baskets Beach might be a bit more challenging compared to other harbour beaches, but the effort is undoubtedly worth it. You can access the beach via stairs from above Beatty Street in Balgowlah, where you can park your car. Alternatively, you can choose to walk along the shoreline from North Harbour Reserve. While it may be a bit less accessible, the reward of discovering one of Northern Sydney’s most picturesque swim spots is well worth the journey.
